Students from The Vista School and Lower Dauphin High School are helping bring a new community resource to Hummelstown with the creation of a colorful Little Free Library that will be unveiled at Cubby’s Ice Cream Café on Thursday, October 15.
The public is invited to join students, staff, and community partners for the official unveiling at 1:30 p.m. at Cubby’s, 295 E. Main St. in Hummelstown. Cubby’s will also host a fundraiser for The Vista School from noon to 5 p.m., donating 10% of sales during that time to the school.
The project was coordinated by Chris Pearson, Career Developer at The Vista School, and grew from a collaboration between students at The Vista School and Lower Dauphin High School.
The finished library reflects the students who helped create it, with brightly colored doors, a hand-painted exterior, and colorful handprints covering its sides. It has also been registered as an official Little Free Library and will remain at Cubby’s as a place where members of the community can share and discover books and other materials.
For Pearson, the project is another opportunity to connect students with the community beyond the walls of the school while giving them the chance to create something that others can continue to enjoy.
Cubby’s Ice Cream Café has been a longtime friend of Vista and a strong supporter of the local community. Owner Jonathan “Papa Bear” Sartini has supported employment opportunities for individuals served by Vista, making the Hummelstown business an especially meaningful home for the students’ project.
Cubby’s describes itself as a family-owned, family-friendly business focused on creating a positive place where the community can come together. Supporting local schools, participating in community events, and promoting positivity and inclusiveness are all part of the business’s approach to giving back.
There is also plenty of incentive to visit for the ice cream itself. Cubby’s serves ice cream based on recipes with roots dating back generations. The ice cream continues to be produced in relatively small batches, with an emphasis on the quality that has helped build a loyal local following.
Community members are encouraged to stop by Cubby’s on October 15 to see the finished library, support the students who helped create it, and enjoy some ice cream while supporting both The Vista School and a local community business.
Visitors are also encouraged to donate books, DVDs, VHS tapes, CDs, fidgets, and toys to help keep the Little Free Library stocked. Those who cannot attend the event may drop off donations at The Vista School, and Vista staff will make sure they are put to good use.
We are grateful to the students, staff, Lower Dauphin High School, and Cubby’s for helping turn a creative idea into a resource that can continue bringing people together in the Hummelstown community.
