Each September, Direct Support Professional Recognition Week shines a light on the people whose work is essential to supporting individuals with disabilities in their homes, schools, workplaces, and communities.
At Vista Autism Services, that recognition carries particular significance. More than 250 Direct Support Professionals make up the majority of our workforce, and their work is at the heart of what we do every day.
During Direct Support Professional Recognition Week, September 13–19, we are proud to recognize the skill, professionalism, and commitment they bring to the individuals and families we serve.
The role of a Direct Support Professional goes far beyond providing assistance.
Across Vista, DSPs build relationships and trust. They help individuals develop skills, become more independent, navigate challenges, participate in their communities, and work toward goals that are meaningful to them.
Some progress can be seen in major milestones. Much of it happens through smaller moments that build over time: learning a new skill, communicating a need, becoming more comfortable in a new environment, gaining confidence, succeeding at work, or doing something more independently than before.
Making those moments possible takes patience, consistency, sound judgment, compassion, and a deep understanding of the individual being supported.
It is skilled, professional work, and it matters.
DSP Recognition Week is also part of a broader national effort to give greater visibility to a workforce that is essential to disability services but whose contributions have not always been fully understood or recognized.
The National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals (NADSP) describes a national workforce of more than 1.5 million Direct Support Professionals. Yet there is still no distinct federal occupational classification for DSPs, making it difficult to accurately count this workforce, understand its needs, and develop policies that reflect the work DSPs actually do.
Efforts to change that are gaining momentum. In August 2026, the U.S. Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee unanimously advanced the Recognizing the Role of Direct Support Professionals Act. The bipartisan legislation would help establish a distinct federal occupational classification for DSPs, an important step toward making the profession more visible and providing better data to inform workforce policy.
Organizations including ANCOR and NADSP continue to advocate nationally for greater recognition of DSPs and stronger support for the direct support workforce.
For Vista, recognizing DSPs also means recognizing the professionalism behind the work. Our DSPs collaborate with families, clinicians, educators, supervisors, and one another while providing individualized support that reflects each person’s needs, strengths, and goals.
They are often the people working most closely alongside the individuals we serve. Their consistency helps build trust. Their observations help inform services. And their dedication helps turn plans and goals into meaningful progress in everyday life.
This year’s DSP Recognition Week artwork reflects something we see throughout Vista every day: professionals who bring real dedication and drive to the work of supporting others.
That sense of purpose can be found across our programs and services and in the countless interactions that happen each day between our DSPs and the people they support.
To Vista’s more than 250 Direct Support Professionals, thank you. Thank you for your professionalism. Thank you for the patience and consistency you bring to your work. Thank you for celebrating progress, working through difficult moments, supporting families, and helping the individuals we serve reach their unique potential.
Direct Support Professional Recognition Week is part of a national effort to elevate the direct support workforce and ensure the profession receives the visibility and recognition it deserves. To every DSP at Vista, and to DSPs everywhere: thank you. Your work matters, and so does the commitment behind it.
