At Vista Autism Services, we believe that the strength of our team is the cornerstone of the exceptional services we provide. This belief was vividly brought to life during our recent Vista Adult Services Organization (VASO) in-service learning day at our Camp Hill location inside the Good Shepherd school. This event marked a rare and cherished opportunity for staff from different locations and programs to come together for a day dedicated to learning, collaboration, and community. In our fast-paced world, such moments of camaraderie are rare. Sitting together, sharing a meal, our team members exchanged stories, insights, and laughter, reinforcing the bonds that make us more than just colleagues.
Safety Techniques Refresher: A Core Focus
Taking advantage of the space provided by the Good Shepherd campus gymnasium, a good portion of our day was dedicated to the annual Safety Techniques Refresher, led by experts Derek Blauch and Bridget Natale. This vital session underscored our unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of our staff and the individuals we serve. Through hands-on training and practical exercises, our team revisited and enhanced their expertise in preventative measures, de-escalation techniques, and emergency response protocols, prioritizing the safety and well-being of our staff and those we serve.
Interdepartmental Collaboration for Service Enhancement
The day also featured collaborative sessions, during which teams from different departments engaged in deep dives into the ISPs of the individuals we serve. These discussions aimed to identify opportunities to enhance and expand our service offerings, fostering a person-centered approach and strengthening the concept of “building a meaningful day.”
Lunch: A Moment of Community and Connection
During our communal lunch, staff members from diverse programs and locations engaged in lively exchanges and shared experiences, fostering a deeper sense of community and connection. This informal gathering not only offered a well-deserved break but also served as a crucial platform for reinforcing interpersonal bonds, enhancing our collective commitment to Vista’s mission.
Leadership Vision and Wellness Emphasis
Brandon Yorty, our new Executive Director for VASO, provided insights into the future direction, focusing on staff wellness and our dedication to continuous improvement. His address covered strategic initiatives to boost efficiency and resource accessibility, reflecting on valuable feedback gathered from staff engagement sessions. The day’s conclusion, with a meditation exercise led by UPMC professionals, highlighted the critical importance of personal well-being for our ability to serve others effectively.
Reflecting on this impactful day, we are reminded of our collective strength and commitment to advancing the quality of life for individuals with autism. It was a day marked by learning, collaboration, and a reinvigorated dedication to our mission, setting a positive course for our future endeavors.
