In a significant step towards enhancing communication and safety, the Pennsylvania State Police have introduced an innovative resource for individuals with autism. This new informational card is designed to be carried and presented during encounters with law enforcement officers, helping to bridge the communication barriers often experienced by individuals with autism.
The initiative was announced by Col. Christopher Paris, commissioner of the Pennsylvania State Police, who emphasized the importance of this tool in promoting safer interactions. “Behaviors associated with autism can cause barriers to effective communication. This card can be presented to reduce those barriers,” Paris stated. When officers are aware that an individual has autism, they can respond with the necessary patience and simplicity, making the encounter safer and more effective for everyone involved.
The card provides critical information, alerting officers that the individual may be nonverbal, bothered by loud noises, hypersensitive to touch, or unresponsive to commands or questions. It guides officers to use a calm and direct voice and to keep their questions and commands straightforward. This initiative is part of a broader effort by Governor Josh Shapiro’s administration to better support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Governor Shapiro, alongside Col. Paris, met with advocates to discuss how law enforcement can better serve individuals with autism. The result was the development of this informational card by the PSP’s Office of Community Engagement. The card can be downloaded for free from the PSP’s website and can be carried in a wallet or saved on a phone. Additionally, state troopers will distribute these cards at various community events, ensuring widespread accessibility.
At Vista Autism Services, we fully support this initiative and commend the Pennsylvania State Police for their proactive approach. This card represents a crucial step in fostering understanding and improving safety for individuals with autism during their interactions with law enforcement. We encourage all individuals and families within our community to download and utilize this card.
