A Milestone Achievement: Pennsylvania’s 2024-25 State Budget Supports Intellectual Disability and Autism Services

We are thrilled to share a significant update that marks a milestone in the support and empowerment of the intellectual disability and autism (ID/A) community in Pennsylvania. The recently passed 2024-25 State Budget includes substantial investments aimed at enhancing the quality of life for individuals with autism and intellectual disabilities and providing much-needed support to direct support professionals who are crucial to their care.

This budget reflects a long-standing commitment from the community, advocates, and various stakeholders who have tirelessly voiced the need for enhanced funding to support home and community-based services. Their advocacy has been instrumental in ensuring that the needs of the ID/A community are met more effectively, paving the way for a future where individuals with autism and intellectual disabilities can achieve their unique potential.

Significant Budgetary Allocations

The new budget earmarks $354.8 million in combined federal and state funding, a testament to the shared effort to support our community. This funding is a vital step forward, encompassing:

A 7 percent rate increase for service providers, which aims to improve the overall quality and accessibility of services.
$280 million dedicated specifically to raising wages for direct support professionals, acknowledging their invaluable role and addressing the workforce shortage in this sector.
$74.8 million allocated to begin clearing the emergency waitlist entirely, ensuring that more Pennsylvanians receive the timely care they need and deserve.
$50 million increase for special education funding to ensure that school districts have the basic resources necessary to provide high-quality special education services to students with disabilities and special needs.
