For parents of children with autism, one of the most profound fears is the risk of drowning, often tied to a lack of danger awareness. When The Vista School relocated to its Springboard campus in 2011, addressing this critical safety issue became a top priority. The Board of Directors quickly initiated plans to construct a swimming pool—a resource designed to teach essential water safety skills and provide therapeutic benefits to students.
The pool was part of a larger $650,000 fundraising campaign to cover tenant improvements at the new campus. With the pool alone accounting for nearly 40% of the total build-out cost, the Board committed to a five-year effort to raise the necessary funds. Thanks to the generosity of countless donors, not only was the campaign completed on schedule, but it also exceeded its fundraising goal.
The addition of the pool has had a profound impact on the Vista community. Beyond teaching water safety and increasing awareness of aquatic dangers, the pool has become a hub for promoting overall health and fitness. For many students, who may become less active as they grow older, the pool offers a fun, engaging way to stay physically active.
“It’s more than just a safety initiative—it’s a social event that fosters peer interaction and builds bonds with staff,” shared a Vista behavior technician supervisor. “Watching students jump and splash, laughing and celebrating their time in the water, is incredibly rewarding. For some classrooms, it’s a moment of pure joy when a student enters the pool for the first time after months or even years of hesitation.”
For children with autism, the sensory experiences of the world can be vastly different. They may be hypersensitive or hyposensitive to stimuli like touch, sounds, and sights. The pool’s hydrostatic pressure provides a unique therapeutic environment tailored to these needs.
“The water itself becomes a tool for therapy,” explained a Vista physical therapist. “For hyperactive students, the calming pressure of the water can help reduce behavioral outbursts. For those with coordination challenges, the resistance and feel of the water improve body awareness and muscle control. And for all students, the resistance strengthens muscles and builds confidence.”
These therapeutic benefits make the pool a vital resource, helping students regulate their bodies and emotions in ways that extend beyond the water.
The pool at The Vista School has become more than just a feature of the campus—it’s a source of progress, pride, and joy. From its role in lifesaving education to its therapeutic and social benefits, the pool embodies Vista’s commitment to fostering growth and independence for its students.
The Vista community is grateful to the donors, staff, and Board of Directors whose vision and generosity made this resource possible. Every splash and smile in the pool is a testament to the impact of their support, ensuring that students can thrive safely and confidently in every aspect of their lives.
