Periodically, we pick staff members to showcase and let you know about the work they do here at Vista. In this profile, we’re pleased to introduce Zachary Huff.
In a few sentences, tell us about your current position and what it involves. I am an Educational Behavior Support. Essentially, I am 1 on 1 with a student every day. My duties include preparing materials and daily instruction, coaching staff on Individual Educational Plan (IEP) goals and behavior plans, and collaborating with MDT about the direction in which we want to guide the student, among others.
What inspired you to work for Vista? My original inspiration for working at Vista was birthed from working with individuals with autism and following a co-worker here. After doing my own research, I decided I wanted to be a part of a specialized team within a school setting.
What do you love most about your job? There are a lot of things I could choose from, but I think the team aspect and feeling of support from the people around you is key. Everyone has the same goal in mind and we all support one another in the journey to reaching that goal.
What do you like to do in your free time? Some would say that I’m a bit of a thrill seeker. I appreciate the adrenaline-producing components that I experience within my hobbies. I have a passion for rock climbing, snowboarding, and hiking. Last year, I finished second in a rock-climbing competition. This is something I’m proud of because I recently bumped up to the next category of difficulty and I trained particularly hard for that competition. It was a satisfying accomplishment.
What do you wish other people knew about autism? There are a lot of things I wish people knew about autism. The overarching theme for me is just that I wish the general knowledge of the public about autism were greater. For example, just because there is a deficit in communication doesn’t mean there is a lack of skills in all areas.
