To celebrate Vista’s 15th anniversary, we are bringing you a spotlight of someone who started his or her employment in each of the past 15 years.
2016 – Laverne Henry
Laverne has been in the human services field for many years, including previous experience in residential services. She was looking for something new when she came across Vista. Laverne thought that Vista looked like a wonderful place and really valued the mission and vision, so she decided to apply for the Residential Assistant position. She was hired for the role at the Highland home on July 5, 2016.
Before coming to Vista, Laverne had never worked with individuals with autism, specifically; however, she’s found it to be a wonderful experience. She shared that working with the two individuals at Highland is a pleasure, as she has had the opportunity to watch them grow throughout their time at Vista.
What do you look forward to when you come to work each day?
“I look forward to the ‘Hi Vern!’ I get when I walk in the door! I look forward to seeing their smiling faces and having the ability to see them transform and grow into the men they are today!”
“The guys are just awesome! They are always happy, and you can really see that they are happy in their environment and with their staff.”
Laverne went on to share that regular and consistent staffing helps the guys to grow, and she can truly see the difference it makes in their lives.
What drives you to stay at Vista? “When I started, Highland had only been open for a few weeks, and I can say that coming in at the beginning really made all the difference! The staff is able to make suggestions and have a voice in helping the residents move forward and have meaningful lives.”
Laverne went on to explain that Vista continually strives to improve the lives of those it serves.
What is the most rewarding part of your current role?
“I have the opportunity to fix their breakfast and drive a resident to the Community Integration Center. They always wake up with a smile on their faces, and it really makes all the difference and is truly rewarding.”
“The guys say ‘thank you’ every morning for what we do for them, and their smiles and a ‘thank you’ really go a long way!”
Laverne is now a veteran at her home and assists with trainings – a really liberating and exciting part of the job!
